Yes. Uploading a GIF as your avatar is a Nitro subscriber perk, per Discord's Custom Profiles help article. On a free account you are limited to static PNG or JPG images, so an animated file will not play as your profile picture.
Discord accepts a square upload but masks it as a circle everywhere it appears: chat, member lists, profile popouts, and the full profile. The corners of your square are always hidden, so keep faces, logos, and any text centered inside an imaginary circle touching the edges of your square canvas. Discord's upload editor lets you crop, center, and rotate before saving.
Yes, with Nitro. Per-server profiles let subscribers set a separate avatar, banner, and About Me for each server they belong to. Discord's support FAQ lists JPG, PNG, and GIF as accepted file types for server avatars with an 8 MB maximum file size. Without Nitro, your one global avatar shows in every server.
Discord downscales and compresses your upload for the small sizes it actually displays, and there is no way to opt out of that processing. The fix is to start from a sharp square image of 512x512 or larger, avoid thin lines and small text, and use high contrast. If you upload something tiny, Discord has to upscale it, which is the most common cause of a soft, blurry avatar.
PNG, JPG, and GIF are the accepted upload formats named in Discord's support docs, with GIF animation reserved for Nitro subscribers. Behind the scenes, Discord's developer documentation shows the CDN can serve your avatar as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or GIF at any power-of-two size between 16 and 4096 pixels.
